Blogs You Should Read

Posted by Elvin on April 2, 2010

In order to improve our blogging skills, we must read more blogs. While reading blogs, we can explore different blogging style, learn new things and know more about something. Therefore, I prefer reading blogs on free time rather than playing online games (sorry if I offended you).

Anyway, here’s a list of blogs I think you guys should take a look. They might not be any problogger or anyone famous, but they are meant for blogging.

#1. Gloson Blog

Gloson, a 12 year old kid blogger from Malaysia. He has been blogging since like eight or nine years old, about social media, blogging and tech tips. On top of that, he’s a funny poet who even has his poetry published. Anyway, you can find various blogging tips in his blog. The only thing I was thinking while reading his blog is ” What the hell was I doing when I was nine?”. Shame on me. lol

#2 My Blog 2day

The man behind My Blog 2day is Lee who has been in the blogging industry since year 2006. If you are into making money online, this is the blog you shouldn’t miss. There are various ways and tips introduced by Lee about making money online. What I like about this blog is with the theme, simple and big font ease the reading. Oh, you can also download the free make money from blogging e-book from his blog as well.

#3 Hong Kiat

HongKiat.com is the place where you can find information about designing. I will usually explore HongKiat.com for font style, photoshop tutorials and wordpress themes recommended by the author. If you are into designing, be sure to check out HongKiat.com. If design isn’t your thing, you can also find beautiful pictures and wallpapers there.

#4 AkiraCEO

I think most of you would probably know of this comic blog. I admire bloggers who can draw or illustrate, maybe because I myself have no talent in art. I love reading comic blogs especially AkiraCEO where the author illustrate himself as a cat, telling his story in a different way. The design in terms of character and theme is why AkiraCEO being on the top of comic blog list.

These blogs shows different blogging techniques or style in delivering information or story. However, imitating their blogging style won’t get you far. Therefore, read more blogs, find your own way, blog it your way. Let’s say if you use blogging as a platform to express yourself, what’s the point of copying or imitating other blogger’s style. right? One last thing, don’t give up on blogging =D

Sarawak Bloggers

Posted by Elvin on March 30, 2010

When I started blogging, the only Kuchingnite blogger I’ve heard of was Kenny Sia. Apart from my classmates, I knew no other Sarawak bloggers in the blog sphere. Soon then, I found more Sarawak bloggers appearing one by one but I don’t really have the chance to know them.

Not long ago, I found this very group which I think will be great for all Sarawakian bloggers. It’s a group called ‘Sarawak Bloggers‘ which is created and maintain by a group of Sarawak bloggers for all Sarawakian bloggers *phew*. I found the group interesting because bloggers around Sarawak can connect with each other through this platform.

To me, this can also be a platform where bloggers can work together in polishing blogging skills as well as bringing blogs into a higher level. If working alone brings you far enough, working together as a team will get you further more.

Other than all that, I do hope that Sarawak Bloggers would also be organizing various activities for bloggers within Sarawak as well. I’ve joined Nuffnang a few months after it was established. It’s been long enough but until now, I’ve yet to participate in any of the events organized by Nuffnang. It’s because almost every event was held only at west Malaysia. Hopefully Sarawak Bloggers would put up more blogger events ya?

So with the above reason, why not join them? Be sure to check them out, give them a try and giving yourself a chance to be part of Sarawak Bloggers.

p/s: To all the fans in Sarawak Bloggers Facebook fan page, do join in the fun by applying to be part of Sarawak Bloggers. Becoming a fan doesn’t make you part of them yet.

Piracy has always been a problem to the entertainment industry with the advancement of the internet. Therefore, Warner Bros Entertainment UK is recruiting students to spy on digital pirates. They are looking for Students within computer related fields to help them in their anti-piracy effort.

During the 12 month internship, duties will include: monitoring local Internet forums and IRC for pirated WB and NBCU content and in order to gather information on pirate sites, pirate groups and other pirate activities; finding new and maintaining existing accounts on private sites; scanning for links to hosted pirated WB and NBCU content and using tools to issue takedown requests; maintaining and developing bots for Internet link scanning system (training provided); preparing sending of infringement notices and logging feedback; performing trap purchases of pirated product and logging results; inputting pirate hard goods data and other intelligence into the forensics database; selecting local keywords and submitting local filenames for monitoring and countermeasure campaigns and periodically producing research documents on piracy related technological developments. Being an graduated degree students, the salary you will be receiving every month on your first job would only be RM1k, RM2k if lucky. How I wish I could be in UK and so I could apply for this internship offer.

The bad part about this job is that the lucky student might experience backlash from, almost every corner of the internet. So, would you take this job if you were given the chance?

Using MacOS in Windows

Posted by Elvin on March 29, 2010

For most of the people out there, Macbooks or iMacs are just hard to afford. With the minimum price of RM3000+ ranging up to RM10000, normal users would prefer not to get ‘Mac’-ed. However, some of the users out there would really try on Mac OS which is only for Macs.

There are several cracked version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard out in the internet where people can download it and installing Mac OS to regular PCs or laptops in the market. I’ve personally tried out one version of it, everything was ok but the wireless adapter isn’t working as it should be.

Anyway, now you can use Mac OS in windows environment. It’s actually tweaking your windows to make it look like Mac OS. I found this video showing how to tweak your window 7 and make it look like Mac OS.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flwJH3OLVYM

You will have the visual of Mac OS but you will never feel the real Mac OS usage. So if you really want to try out Mac OS, check out the nearest Apple Store or authorized Apple Store, try out the demo set before getting serious into being ‘Mac’-ed.

I Got ThemeMX

Posted by Elvin on March 19, 2010

It’s long since I won something from the internet. A few days ago, I finally won something online again in a massive contest! Thanks to Huzzer Magazine, I’ve won myself a licensed theme by thememx which I’m it now using. I’m really happy with the theme since it suited my taste and how I want my blog to be.

Unlike free wordpress themes that are available in the internet, ThemeMX offers more user friendly options for those who are not really good in codings. Options that will appear in the wordpress lets you customize the theme easily without having better knowledge on css coding.

See? You can add your ads, twitter account and so on in the wordpress admin page. Thememx comes with two different publishing format. you can choose either a normal blog thememx or a magazine type thememx.

Sorry if the theme looks weird, it’s because I have not fully customize the wordpress template. Thanks again to Huzzer Magazine and Thememx for this great prize! Oh, if you want to get thememx for your blog, check here out!

What can I do with twitter?

Posted by Elvin on March 5, 2010

I’ve registered a twitter account since a long time ago. All these while, I have been on and off from twitter, not knowing what I can do with twitter. Not only twitter, I joined plurks too, which is a little more fun than twitter. It was fun for the first few days but at the end, it’s boring.

or maybe I don’t have much friend using twitter. Most of my friends just create an account and leave it there. That is why typing something in twitter is like typing it to myself, don’t you feel so? haha. The best part about twitter is that you can make money online using twitter. However, you can only make more money from twitter when you have many followers.

There are also ways to increase your twitter followers. One of the trick is to follow certain popular accounts. In a few minutes, people will start to follow your twitter as well. But, the main purpose those people follow you is so that they could earn money when they tweet advertisements. Therefore, it’s useless to increase your twitter followers using tricks.

So, what and why you use twitter for? Anyway, you are welcomed to follow me and I will follow you as well.

How to Hack P1Wimax

Posted by Elvin on January 20, 2010

Since the University is providing bad wifi services, most of the students applied for broadbands in order to online in their rooms. Especially after the Potong Session, many new p1 user started to appear. P1 users will have a modem which comes with a wireless adapter after they applied for packages. For some people, they tried to hack into other’s P1 network and get internet access for free.

In this post, I’m not going to teach you how to hack into those P1 networks, but I will be giving you hints on how to hack into P1 networks. As you can see in the image, the red frame with weird combination of numbers and alphabets are actually the default network names for P1’s wireless adapter which comes with the modem. By default, the WEP passwords are actually almost the same as the network names. For example, 0810DE network, the pass will be 810DEXXXXX, the XXXXX will be the thing you need to add in at the back. I won’t reveal what’s the thing to add but it’s the same for all P1 default passwords.

Anyway, you can also hack into home networks if they are using wireless modems. Some of the users do not know how to change the passwords for the modem leaving the default name and password there. Therefore, if you see some names like within the orange frame, you can enter into their network using default passwords of different brands.

Actually, I’m not teaching you how to hack into networks but trying to give awareness. Users should try to configure their networks and change their default passwords. If you do not know how, try to lookup to the manual book. If it’s gone, you can always lookup onto the internet for info. Good luck!

imelvin.com is an adult site?

Posted by Elvin on January 6, 2010

Ojibala told me that he saw this message when he was trying to access my blog in his faculty today. According to the site filtering system, my site is suspected to be an adult site. On the second attempt using UTM wireless service, my site was suspected as a medium for malware or spyware.

Anyway, I tried to detect my blog if it’s inflected or not. It’s because some of the wordpress theme creators might have scripts embedded in their wordpress themes. The result shows that my blog is still clean. Oh! You can check if your own blog is inflected with malwares or not with the Google Webmaster tools, and if you are using firefox, you will be prompt when you are about to step into potential dangerous sites.

What actually happen? Is there anything wrong with my blog? or is the filtering system too sensitive?

*UPDATES*

Ok, now I know what’s wrong with my blog. It was block because of the CBOX that I’m using which they started to implement the pop up ads system. So, I changed it to shoutmix which is a better chat box and most importantly, no annoying ads =D

I'm Back With P1 Wimax

Posted by Elvin on December 25, 2009

Sorry for not updating for quite awhile now. I’m now in Johore starting my new semester and remember that I’ve potong? That’s the reason why I’m not updating, erm..I mean one of the reason. I’m just lazy to update the blog most of the time. I’m not blaming myself though, I blame it on the University of Technology Malaysia (UTM) for not being “Technology” at all, I only can access the internet in certain areas. I’m not asking for more but at least WiFi services in hostels?

Well, as for this Christmas, I gave myself a very nice present, the chance to online again in room. I’ve applied for P1 Wimax exactly on 12am on Christmas Day thanks to a bunch of money-hungers hardworking UTM students doing the promoting job around the hostel even if it’s Christmas Eve.

Had a very hard time searching for the perfect position to receive the signal due to limited area coverage. After that all went well but this is just the first day using it. Maxis broadband went well on the first year but suck big time after one year. Hopefully P1 won’t let me down.

Saya Sudah Potong

Posted by Elvin on November 25, 2009

Not long ago, I saw this Potong promotion by P1 Wimax driving many people ‘potong’ just to get the promotion. Since it is a ‘potong’ season, I too ‘potong’-ed and I tell you, it sure is painful for me. After ‘potong’, I suffered from this ‘potong’ pain for like 1~2 months.

Yes, I ‘potong’-ed my Maxis broadband subscription. I decided to ‘potong’ due to poor performance by the service provider. It was painful for me because I wasn’t able to online for 1~2 months. Without the internet, my laptop is just like a fish without water.

Even though Maxis always have beautiful promoters promoting their stuff in every pc fair, yet I have to ‘potong’.

Even though Maxis have been by my side for 1 whole year, yet I have to ‘potong’.

Even though Maxis gave me 300-400kb/s download speed for a few days before, yet I still have to ‘potong’.

When you are old, you need to go.

Sorry Maxis,

Hello, P1!

After ‘potong’ Maxis Broadband, I tried on P1 Wimax since the area where I stayed in the University is within the coverage. I’m so excited that time thinking that I’m about to enjoy lightning fast internet speed, but ho, why I can’t receive any signal in my room. *SIGH*

So, I’ve ‘potong’-ed, now what?
