Sarawak Bloggers

Posted by Elvin on March 30, 2010

When I started blogging, the only Kuchingnite blogger I’ve heard of was Kenny Sia. Apart from my classmates, I knew no other Sarawak bloggers in the blog sphere. Soon then, I found more Sarawak bloggers appearing one by one but I don’t really have the chance to know them.

Not long ago, I found this very group which I think will be great for all Sarawakian bloggers. It’s a group called ‘Sarawak Bloggers‘ which is created and maintain by a group of Sarawak bloggers for all Sarawakian bloggers *phew*. I found the group interesting because bloggers around Sarawak can connect with each other through this platform.

To me, this can also be a platform where bloggers can work together in polishing blogging skills as well as bringing blogs into a higher level. If working alone brings you far enough, working together as a team will get you further more.

Other than all that, I do hope that Sarawak Bloggers would also be organizing various activities for bloggers within Sarawak as well. I’ve joined Nuffnang a few months after it was established. It’s been long enough but until now, I’ve yet to participate in any of the events organized by Nuffnang. It’s because almost every event was held only at west Malaysia. Hopefully Sarawak Bloggers would put up more blogger events ya?

So with the above reason, why not join them? Be sure to check them out, give them a try and giving yourself a chance to be part of Sarawak Bloggers.

p/s: To all the fans in Sarawak Bloggers Facebook fan page, do join in the fun by applying to be part of Sarawak Bloggers. Becoming a fan doesn’t make you part of them yet.

imElvin.com Going 'Dark'

Posted by Elvin on March 27, 2010

In conjunction of Earth Hour 2010, imElvin.com will also be switching off it’s lights! imElvin.com will be going ‘dark’ as well! Unfortunately, I wasn’t in time to switch off the lights in my blog. Therefore, I will be switching it off until tommorow 9.30pm. This is too show how much I would support for this type of events.

So, did you switch off your lights? Well, before the Earth Hour, I was given a job delivering newspapers around the university. I was afraid that finding doors will be hard for me on that particular hour. Sadly, Things turn out the other way around, student within the university are not participating in this event.

Anyway, the blog is going dark, and there might be some visual problem happen right after I turn it dark. The blog seems to turn out really really weird but I’m still turning it dark. Happy Earth Hour everyone =D

Earth Hour 2010

Posted by Elvin on March 26, 2010

Earth Hour 2010 is finally here, marked on 27th of March 2010 8.30pm local time. People from around the world will be switching off their lights for an hour according to country’s own timezone. This is a global event organized by World Wide Fund for nature(WWF) with the purpose of raising awareness towards the needs to take action on climate change.

This year, more people and companies will be participating in this event. Even KL tower and Petronas Twin tower participated to the event since Earth Hour 2008. Earth Hour 2010 has estimated to becoming the largest earth hour event ever.

Upon Earth Hour, there’s a rumor with TNB to sue WWF over Earth Hour. With the reason Earth Hour causing TNB to lose a large amount of money yet still wasting energy produced. In a Press Conference, TNB CEO said that this event is nothing more than an ‘arrogant and thoughtless viral movement’ aimed to harm power companies.

He added, “In light of such inconsiderate actions by these tree huggers, TNB has no choice but to take legal action against the Earth Hour organisers, WWF. We’ll wait for our accountants to come back with the loss figure after this year’s Earth Hour, and we plan to sue them for that same amount. We may even add a hundred million ringgit or so, to teach them a lesson.”

However, this is not yet an official news because this article is not found in the major news sites in Malaysia. Therefore, it’s still a rumor. Anyway, if this is true, his action will be a disgrace to Malaysian. To me, TNB support this type of event though, always black out from time to time.

For Earth Hour 2010, I will be switching off the lights and hopefully my computer as well. It might be difficult for me to shut down my computer because I can’t stand doing nothing in the dark without my computer. Anyway, will you be supporting Earth Hour? What will you do more?

Updates:

About the rumor, it’s fake and yes, TNB CEO is not a jerk =D Anyway, it’s still true about blackout.

iPhone 3GS by Digi

Posted by Elvin on March 2, 2010

For Malaysian, there are only 2 ways of getting an iPhone 3GS. One, either you go to Hotlink and get one with a call plan, or you could get an unlocked version from online, of cause the second way will be illegal. However, getting your iPhone from Hotlink requires you to take up a heavy duty call and data plan, which normal people would not spend for it.

Soon enough, you can also get an iPhone 3GS from Digi. You can now read about the news in Digi’s official website. However, the price of iPhone and the plan for it has not being show. If you are interested with the iPhone plan, you can leave your email there and have them email you once the details have been confirm.

Hopefully the price will be rather cheaper compare with Hotlink. However, I think I won’t be getting one, I prefer blackberry instead. I would probably get an iPod touch since it’s cheaper and has the same function, except for the camera and the 3G phone function.

So, how about you?

Chinese New Year

Posted by Elvin on February 20, 2010

I notice, Chinese New Year isn’t about visiting houses, taking/ giving ang pow, or watching lion dance anymore. It’s more about shopping, watching movie, and yam cha for Kuchingnites. I stopped by the Spring almost everyday during Chinese new year and people never stop flooding the Spring especially MBO cinema.

Even though most of the shop are closed during the first few days of the Chinese calender, Spring’s car park were always full. As valentine’s day and first day of Chinese new year were on the same day, couples flooded MBO cinema and also some of the remaining restaurants like Sushi King, McD and bla bla.

Anyway, things went the same way for me either. I went to Spring almost everyday. Shopping, watching movie, and even a walk after meals. Since there wasn’t much shop running that time, I have to hunt for the remaining. Rarely, I went into MPH with Karen, and looked up for some kid punya books. Being kids nowadays are so fun with all the new type of books available.

You have books to teaches you how to tie shoelaces.

and you have books that you can actually feel the animal skin.

I learn new stuff myself even after reading a few books from the kid’s section. No kidding!

Now I know how a tiger’s skin felt like…without getting chase or eaten =D

Happy New Tiger Year!

I heart Kuching

Posted by Elvin on February 8, 2010

Finally I’m having my little holiday since it’s near Chinese New year. Last year I missed celebrating Chinese new year in my hometown but for this year, I will be in Kuching celebrating Chinese new year. What’s better is that I’m enjoying an extra week holiday off!

Anyway, it’s only been 2 months since I left Kuching and now, there’s another shopping mall where I can lepak. Yup, it’s Hills Shopping Mall which is on the same building with the new Pullman Kuching. Like every Kuchingkia, I love new things too. Whenever there’s a new shopping mall or what, I must go and see it with my own eyes. So I step foot on Hills shopping mall on the second day I reach Kuching.

Since it’s still new, there aren’t many shops at the moment. However, Karen is happy and excited with Skin Food which is finally here in Kuching. Now, I won’t need to buy Skin Food products for her in JB and bring it back =D. Oh, my little cousin is also happy with the big ToyRus opened within the shopping mall. I promised to bring him there and get him a birthday present before I step foot into the shop, once I went in the shop, the next thing I’m thinking was “I’m gonna be broke, big time”.

On that night when I went there, there was this yoyo show which wasn’t impressive, and a fashion show, which attracted lots and lots of people standing near the stage. The fashion show was like models wearing a big sushi as hat, big bee on top and magazines all over them. It was pretty funny.

To me, Spring is still the best =D although boring but still the best =D

Marilah Mengundi

Posted by Elvin on January 28, 2010

Ho, it’s long since I last update my blog. It’s due to heavy load of assignments and tests. Anyway, today mark the end of the campus election period for student represent in University of Technology Malaysia. This is also the period where you can find alot of hanging posters and flying flyers with faces which comes along with a X right below them.

It’s an event where a lot papers, plastics and all sorts of stationary are wasted just to promote students who wish to stand out or wanted to represent UTM students. In this 3 days period, we have been continuously receiving sms on who to vote, or visitors which tells you who to vote and what they promise to do when they got into the Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar (MPP). It’s more likely same as politician elections in your area but the only different is you don’t get the road repair or drains unclog.

However, there are candidates who came out with ridiculous promises. Promises such as he would fight for 50% off flight ticket as if his daddy owns Airasia or Mas, 0% interest for ptptn. I wonder if he thinks before he puts on these promises. On the student side, posters burning are of cause unavoidable which this isn’t a positive act for these so called educated people.

Haha. The best part about voting every year in UTM is that we will be getting free stuff right after we vote. Every year, first ten students for each faculty who voted received a pendrive as a token of appreciation, the rest would be stuff like planners or drinks or foods.

Today, we voted, we fulfilled our responsibility like what they asked us to do. After tomorrow, will those who won the election fulfil theirs? Oh hey, can give me those posters after you guys take it off? Can use it for printing and calculation mah.

3D, Trend or Threat

Posted by Elvin on January 22, 2010

3D is one of the latest trend running in the technology world, you can now purchase 3D laptops which were lunched year 2009. Built in Software which is able to turn 2D movies into 3D. Most of the movies screening in cinemas are in both 2D and 3D since last year, giving movie lovers more sight pleasure. I myself prefer watching 3D movies since it’s nicer. However, it’s slightly expensive compare to normal 2D movies.

2 days ago, there’s a news in the newspaper which reported that a guy in Taiwan died due to stroke after having some headache watching “Avatar” in 3D, no kidding though. Some people might suffer headache watching movies in 3D, are you one of them? Anyway, it’s kinda difficult to find 3D cinemas here in Malaysia, I only know we can watch 3D movies in cinema in KL and Kuching only. Anyone know where else to watch 3D movies?

Monthly Magazine

Posted by Elvin on January 11, 2010

It was and always very boring when there is nothing to do in the hostel. Since I don’t play games anymore (yes, I don’t, don’t doubt me), reading makes it all better. However, reading books is like eating sleeping pills to me. Instead of books, I enjoy reading magazines and blogs. Therefore, on a monthly basis, I would head down to the nearest MPH to get my monthly dose of must-read magazines.

Dontcha wish your girlfriend was hot like her?

Yes, since I’m a geek, magazines I read are usually related with technology. Owh! yes, I know I know, I can just download e-magazines and read. One point that I prefer buying Malaysia-written magazines is all those gadgets and technology are all AVALIABLE in Malaysia which I will have no problem getting it except for money matters. All those e-magazines are all from USA or someplace else.

My list of must-read mags:

Chip -RM9.90

My favorite magazine, talks about technologies, tutorials, stuff. The best Malaysia Magazine? Maybe, but the bad thing about chip is that I only can get it on mid of the month, not early of the month.

Stuff -RM8.00

This is my favorite gadget magazine, reviews on trends, games, gadgets and stuff. The only bad thing about Stuff is, I don’t have all the money for all those things I saw inside. It itch me alot.

T3 -RM7.00

T3 by velocity media. This is the other gadget magazine, similar to Stuff but less to give. Cheaper however, would go for if I have extra pocket money.

Max IT -RM7. 00

MaxIT by velocity media, talks about technology, giving tutorials and so on. I don’t really like MaxIT so I wouldn’t recommend it to you all because content quality isn’t really what I’m expecting for (maybe I’m expecting too much). However, simple English is the thing where you can just understand everything in it =D

Digital Camera -RM9.00

I just bought this starting this month. Another magazine by velocity media. Found it nice with all those cameras and tutorials. Hopefully I will get my very own DSLR or semi- DSRL by this year so I can try every tutorial there is =D

Since this happens on monthly basis, it kinda shrink down my pocket size. I need to cut down on those magazines. Hopefully I earn more in Google Adsense then only I will have money for magazines or gadgets!
